Damien strokes my shoulder as I finish crying. I look at him, something's wheezing from his nostrils. He's looking at me. We start to kiss, lots of saliva splashes in and outside of our mouths. Damien's mum calls his name. We pull apart. I wipe my face before Francine comes into the room after a rough tapping.
'Dinner's up. Are you staying Reilly? Plenty to go around.'
'No thanks. My mum will have made something.' Francine nods then closes the door. I stand before Damien can kiss me again.
'I better go. Mum will be waiting. He nods, staring at me.
'See you then.' He nods again. I close his door and shuffle along the Harris's hallway. My flip flops echo on the tiles. The rest of the new's blasts from the television in the open-plan living area.
'See you,' I say to Damien's parents, who are eating their dinner at the dining room table.
'See you love,' they say as I shut the fly screen, then the door, and get into mum's car.
I start crying all over again, pulling out of the drive way. Get Real Reilly, stop being such a stupid bitch. I spray water onto the windscreen and wipe it clean with the wipers. I drive down the street and out onto the main road. Why can't I stop crying? It's pouring out of me like I'm a tap someone has forgotten to turn off. I wait at the intersection to turn right. I look over at the local shops waiting for the arrow to turn green. I watch people filling up their cars with fuel after work. Joggers dot the side walk getting in a workout before the sun sets. There's a general buzz of people buying shopping and getting dinner. That's when I see her. Tara. Walking along the street as if nothing has happened.
