After saying hi to Damien's mum, I follow him through to his bedroom surprised to find Dean isn't there.

'Dean went home,' he says before I can ask. I nod. Damien sits down on his bed. I hesitate before taking a seat at his desk in the corner. It's covered in sharpenings from blunt, snapped pencil stubs that look like they've been ground into the table. Silence dances around the room.

'How's Dean?' I say cutting in. Damien shrugs.

'He's a mess.'

'Was he with Tara the night she disappeared?'

'For some of it and hockey practice the rest. The police keep asking him questions like he knows more than he's letting on which is making him feel worse. He's blaming himself. He says he should have stayed with her rather than went to practice.'

'Where did she go?'

Damien shrugs again.

'Who knows. Dean said she stayed to watch for a while, then he looked up and she was gone.'

'Do the police know anything?'

'If they do they're not telling anyone. Dean doesn't want to keep calling Tara's parents; they said they'd call him if they heard anything.'

'What time is it?'

Damien looks at his watch.

'5.45pm.'

'Turn on the news,' I shout.

We sit quietly watching the adverts until the news comes on. The headlines are read out with the announcement a teenager missing from Perth's suburbs. I wring my fists. Damien turns up the volume so loud my body vibrates with the sound. The newsreader shows a CCTV clip of Tara, on her phone, leaving the sports centre where Dean has hockey practice. Once I see Tara's face come up on the screen and her dad giving a statement, I break down. The bulletin ends. Damien switches the television off. He removes his bent cap from his head and rubs his shaggy hair with it before repositioning it back into place.

'I can't believe Tara is missing Damien.' He shuffles over and puts his arm around me, rubbing his hand up and down my shoulder as I cry into my hands.
