Tara didn't come home last night. Her mum called my house at 4 o'clock this morning, but she's not here and I don't know where she is? She's not with Dean or anybody else from school either, and her phone's switched off. Mum said I could stay at home, but I wanted to go to school in case Tara showed up.

Dean and Damien aren't in class. I'm on my own. Everyone goes about like it's a normal day, suppose it is to them. At lunch I pull an apple from my bag then launch it back in. I take out my phone and try Tara's number again. I get her recorded voice message, triggering fresh panic. Tears threaten out of worry and lack of sleep.

I couldn't close my eyes after Tara's mum's phone call last night. I kept picturing the worst: the man from my bedroom had her or she was down a ditch somewhere. Get real Reilly. But I couldn't switch off these terrible mental images. I wanted to run from myself but they ran after me. Second period I gave up with school and started to walk instead. I went to all of the usual shops we hung out at. I went to the cafe with the foamy frappes we were addicted to and to our spot at the beach, but she wasn't anywhere. I called her house, but her parents were beside themselves, another few hours and Tara would be a missing person.

Was this really happening? I keep imagining Tara walking in her front door after her disappearance blows full scale and shouting surprise! She's a joker like that.

I try Dean, no answer. I really don't want to. But I know I have to. I call Damien, he picks up.

'Hey' I say.' Have you heard about Tara?'.

'Yeah,' he replies. 'I'm with Dean. He's not doing so good. Have you heard from her?'

'No,' I say, starting to cry. Damien is silent.

'Can I come see you guys?' I hear their muffled voices as Damien asks Dean.

'Sure,' he says.

'Thanks Damien, I'll come over now.' He is about to hang up.

'She'd never not come home on purpose,' I blurt out.

'I know Reilly, I know. Everything's going to be alright. ' That's when I knew something terrible must have happened to Tara...
